Overview

This page explains what data thepangeamap.com collects, why, and how you can control it. The short version: we use two analytics tools to understand how people use the site. We do not sell data, we show no ads, and we do not build advertising profiles. There is no account system and we never ask you for personal information.

Umami — privacy-first analytics

Umami is a lightweight, open-source analytics tool that we host ourselves. It runs on every page and does not use cookies or store anything on your device.

It does not collect personal data and does not track you across other websites. It records only aggregate, anonymous information such as which pages are viewed, the referring site, and general browser, device, and country data derived from your IP address — the IP address itself is discarded and never stored. Because no personal data is processed, Umami runs without a consent prompt.

Google Analytics 4 — only with your consent

We also use Google Analytics for more detailed usage statistics. Google Analytics is only loaded if you choose “Accept all” on the cookie banner. Until then, no Google Analytics code runs and no Google cookies are set.

We use Google Consent Mode v2: analytics and advertising storage signals all default to “denied” before any Google code could execute. When you accept, we grant only the analytics storage signal — Google Analytics then loads and sets its “_ga” and “_ga_<id>” cookies to measure visits and sessions.

We have explicitly disabled Google Signals and advertising personalization. The data is used only to understand site usage: popular pages, traffic sources, and approximate location and device type. Data collected through Google Analytics is processed by Google LLC and retained for at most 14 months.

Cookies and local storage

Umami: no cookies, no local storage.

Google Analytics (only after you accept): “_ga” and “_ga_<id>” cookies, used to measure visits and sessions, expiring after about 13 months.

Your consent choice: a single value named “pangea_consent_v1” is kept in your browser’s local storage so the banner does not reappear on every page. This never leaves your device and is not sent to us or to Google.

Your choices

When you first visit, a banner lets you Accept all or Reject. Choosing Reject keeps Google Analytics switched off entirely.

You can change your decision at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser, or install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Legal basis (EEA, UK, Switzerland)

Where the GDPR or an equivalent law applies, our legal basis for Google Analytics is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time with no effect on prior processing. Umami processes no personal data and does not rely on consent.

Because this is a static site with no reliable way to determine your location, the consent banner is shown to every visitor rather than only within the EEA, UK, and Switzerland.

Data sharing and your rights

We share data only with the providers needed to run the site: Google (Google Analytics, if you consent) and our website host. We do not sell personal data.
