Overview

This page explains what data thepangeamap.com collects, why, and how you can control it. The short version: we use two analytics tools to understand how people use the site, and the site is funded by advertising served through Mediavine. We do not sell data, there is no account system, and we never ask you for personal information.

Umami — privacy-first analytics

Umami is a lightweight, open-source analytics tool that we host ourselves. It runs on every page and does not use cookies or store anything on your device.

It does not collect personal data and does not track you across other websites. It records only aggregate, anonymous information such as which pages are viewed, the referring site, and general browser, device, and country data derived from your IP address — the IP address itself is discarded and never stored. Because no personal data is processed, Umami runs without a consent prompt.

Google Analytics 4 — only with your consent

We also use Google Analytics for more detailed usage statistics. Consent for it is handled by Mediavine’s consent tool — the same one that manages advertising — rather than a banner of our own. Where consent is required (the EEA, UK and Switzerland), no Google Analytics code runs and no Google cookies are set unless you agree. Elsewhere that tool is not shown and Google Analytics loads without a prompt; the opt-out options under “Your choices” below still apply.

We use Google Consent Mode v2. Mediavine’s consent tool sets the analytics and advertising storage signals and updates them from your choice, so where consent is required they start at “denied” before any Google code could execute. Once analytics storage is granted, Google Analytics loads and sets its “_ga” and “_ga_<id>” cookies to measure visits and sessions.

We have explicitly disabled Google Signals and advertising personalization. The data is used only to understand site usage: popular pages, traffic sources, and approximate location and device type. Data collected through Google Analytics is processed by Google LLC and retained for at most 14 months.

Cookies and local storage

Umami: no cookies, no local storage.

Google Analytics (only after you accept): “_ga” and “_ga_<id>” cookies, used to measure visits and sessions, expiring after about 13 months.

Advertising and your consent choice: Mediavine and its advertising partners may set cookies and similar identifiers where you allow them to, and Mediavine’s consent tool records your choice on your device so it does not have to ask again on every page. That tool lists the individual partners and purposes. We no longer store a consent value of our own.

Amazon affiliate links

Some pages include Amazon affiliate links to books, games and science kits, marked with a short “Amazon affiliate link” note. If you buy something after following one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

On our side, Umami records only anonymous, aggregate counts of how often each link is shown and clicked (the product, where on the site it appeared, and the page language). No cookies are set and nothing identifies you.

Once you follow a link you are on Amazon’s website, and Amazon may collect data and set cookies under its own privacy notice — for example to attribute a purchase to the referral. We do not receive any personal information about you or your purchases from Amazon.

Your choices

Where consent is required, Mediavine’s consent tool asks before advertising or analytics cookies are set, and lets you accept or reject the individual purposes and partners.

You can change your decision at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page, which re-opens that tool. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser, or install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Legal basis (EEA, UK, Switzerland)

Where the GDPR or an equivalent law applies, our legal basis for Google Analytics is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time with no effect on prior processing. Umami processes no personal data and does not rely on consent.

Whether you are asked depends on where you are. The site detects the visitor’s country at the network edge, and Mediavine’s consent tool applies its own regional rules on top of that; where consent is not legally required, Google Analytics is loaded without a prompt.

Data sharing and your rights

We share data only with the providers needed to run the site: Google (Google Analytics, if you consent) and our website host. We do not sell personal data.
