Which Countries Were Neighbors on Pangea?

April 22, 2026

If you could draw national borders on a map of Pangea 250 million years ago, some of the neighbors would shock you. Countries separated today by thousands of kilometers of ocean were once directly touching.

Brazil and West Africa

The eastern coast of Brazil was in direct contact with the western coast of Africa along modern Senegal, Guinea, Nigeria, and Cameroon. The Sao Francisco craton in Brazil aligns with the Congo craton in Africa. The same dinosaur fossils appear on both sides.

This connection lasted until around 130 million years ago, when rifting began pulling the continents apart and the South Atlantic was born.

The United States and Morocco

The eastern seaboard of North America, including Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida, was pressed against the region now occupied by Morocco and northwestern Algeria. The Appalachian Mountains and the Anti-Atlas Mountains of Morocco are remnants of the same mountain-building event.

Nova Scotia in Canada aligned with Spain and Portugal. When the Atlantic began to open, it split this ancient collision zone, leaving matching rocks on both sides.

Antarctica and India

During Pangea, India and Antarctica were pressed together within Gondwana. Fossil evidence from both landmasses shows the same Glossopteris flora and the reptile Lystrosaurus, confirming their shared history.

Antarctica and Australia also shared a long border during Gondwana, remaining joined long after Africa and South America had separated. When Australia finally left around 35 million years ago, it isolated Antarctica at the South Pole.

Europe and North America

Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia were once part of the same landmass as eastern Greenland and northeastern Canada. The Caledonian Mountains of Scotland and Norway connect directly to the Appalachians when the Atlantic is closed.

The North Atlantic did not begin to open until around 60 million years ago, long after the South Atlantic formed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What two continents fit together best?

South America and Africa are the classic example. Their coastlines fit together like puzzle pieces, and the match extends to rock types, fossil records, and geological structures on both sides.

Were any countries landlocked in the Pangea interior?

Many. Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, and Central Asian countries sat near the center of Pangea, far from any ocean.

Did animals walk between continents on Pangea?

Yes. The same land animal species appear across what are now separate continents. Dinosaur relatives spread freely across Pangea before it broke apart.
