Countries That Traveled the Furthest Since Pangea
May 4, 2026
Not all tectonic plates move at the same speed or in the same direction. Since Pangea began to break apart 200 million years ago, some fragments of crust have traveled extraordinary distances. Here is a ranking of the countries that have moved the most.
1. India: The Record Holder
India holds the record for the longest tectonic journey of any major landmass since Pangea. Starting from a position south of the equator near Antarctica, India drifted northward at up to 20 centimeters per year and traveled more than 8,000 kilometers before colliding with Asia about 50 million years ago.
The collision created the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. India is still moving today at about 5 centimeters per year, which means it has technically never stopped its northward march.
2. Australia: Still Racing North
Australia separated from Antarctica around 35 million years ago and has since moved more than 2,500 kilometers northward at roughly 7 centimeters per year. At this rate it is one of the fastest-moving continental plates on Earth today.
In roughly 50 million years, Australia will begin colliding with Southeast Asia, creating a new mountain range. The collision will also close off the seaways between the Indian and Pacific oceans.
3. Greenland and North America
The opening of the North Atlantic pushed North America and Greenland several thousand kilometers from Europe. While the rate of movement was slower than India or Australia, the total distance is still significant. Greenland sits about 3,000 kilometers from Scandinavia, a gap that has grown over roughly 60 million years.
North America as a whole has moved westward relative to Europe, with the Atlantic widening by about 2 to 3 centimeters per year.
Countries That Moved the Least
Africa is the interesting counterexample. Because Africa was roughly at the center of Pangea, it has not moved as dramatically as India or Australia. Africa is still near its Pangea position relative to the rest of the world, though it has rotated slightly and the Sahara has shifted climate zones dramatically.
Parts of the ancient cratons, such as those in Canada, West Africa, and Australia, are some of the oldest and most stable pieces of crust on Earth and have moved the least in relative terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has moved the furthest since Pangea?
India has traveled the greatest distance, covering more than 8,000 kilometers from its starting position near Antarctica to its current location north of the equator.
Which continent has moved the least?
Africa has moved the least in terms of latitude change, largely because it was near the center of Pangea. Parts of African cratons have barely shifted in hundreds of millions of years.
How do scientists measure how far continents have moved?
Scientists use GPS measurements for current rates, paleomagnetism to trace ancient plate positions, and fossil records to confirm where landmasses were located at specific times.
